Hello Parents/Guardians, 

As we head into December, we are sure many of you are starting to wonder about Grade 10 transitions. We wanted to send you some updates, as well as some information about this time of year and what to expect. 

Some Important Notes:

• Students go to their designated high schools. The designated high school is based on your location in the city. They may ONLY transfer if there is a specific program such as IB, Performing Arts, French etc.... As parents you can not just choose your high school, or just apply without a specific reason. For example, if you want to go to IB, Henry Wise Wood is the designated IB program for the south. You can not just "apply" to Western because you would like your child to go there.
• Please do not ask teachers for recommendation letters, unless you are going to a private school and they specifically request it. 
• To find your designated school use: https://cbe.ab.ca/schools/find-a-school/Pages/default.aspx 
• There is a board at school that we keep updated with information about high schools. Please have your students check it regularly for information.
• Schools will take recommendations for next year courses from this years teachers. Typically to get -1 course recommendations students should be making mostly 4's and some 3's in their coursework in Grade 9. Teachers have had conversations with students about what is required to get -1 recommendations. If you have any questions or concerns about your students work it needs to be raised early. Once the recommendation is in, it is very hard to change. This happens in early January.
• I am including the PowerPoint from earlier this year that outlined the process, as well as identified the high schools that Fairview feeds into. It is attached to the bottom of this email.

Centennial- January 23^rd- Open House 7pm-9pm; January 23^rd- Grade 9 Student Tour

Dr. EP Scarlett- November 20^th- Advanced Placement Information Evening 5:30pm

JCS- No information at this time.

Lord Beaverbrook- January 23^rd- Grade 9 Parent Evening 6pm-8pm; January 27^th- Grade 9 Student tour

Central(this school is only for students who are accessing their performing visual arts program)-November 21^st- PVA Open House- 6:30pm-8:45pm

We will try to send updates regularly as we receive them. If you have any questions about programs, open houses, etc… please reach out to the high schools, as we only have the information that we send on to you.
